Harry Styles Told Madison Square Garden He Lost a Friend Two Years Ago Today, Then Played the Song He Wrote for Liam Payne

Harry Styles debuted “What Is Enough” at Madison Square Garden on October 16, the second anniversary of his One Direction bandmate Liam Payne’s death. He told the New York crowd he’d written the song for his friend about 2 years earlier.

Before playing it, Styles spoke about seeing his name in a building that meant so much to him and the people who’d helped him get there. “There are so many people in my life, friends and people that I’ve worked with, that I wouldn’t have been able to do this without. And two years ago today, I lost one of those friends.”

He introduced the song with a request: “I’m gonna play you a song I wrote for my friend about two years ago, if that’s all right.”

Payne was 31 when he died on October 16, 2024, after falling from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

After his death, Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik released a joint statement mourning their bandmate. “The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever,” they said. “We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam.”

In March, Styles spoke to Zane Lowe about the loss: “It’s difficult to lose any friend, but it’s so difficult to lose a friend who is so like you in so many ways. It’s like, I saw someone with the kindest heart who just wanted to be great.”
