Hilary Duff says making music with her husband came with exactly one fight, and it started in the studio over his lingo.

Duff, 39, was describing her first album in more than a decade, “luck… or something,” which came out on Atlantic in February 2026 and which she co-wrote every track of with Matthew Koma. The two married in 2019 and share three daughters, Banks, Mae and Townes.

She says the clash came when she was trying to explain something she imagined for a track and he told her people don’t do that. She wanted to anyway. He kept saying he was “not clear” on what she wanted, then “went in on” her.
So she pushed back. She told him she hadn’t “done this in 12 years” and needed him to “tone it down,” since he does studio work every day. She knew what she wanted, she said, she just couldn’t explain it and needed his help getting there.
By her account, that was the whole fight. Koma called and apologized before she even got home.
Koma has made music daily since he was 15 and co-wrote Zedd’s “Clarity.” Duff has said she doesn’t “speak this language” in the studio, which is part of why she wanted him on the record anyway. She told Dakota Fanning the album had to be “just me and you.”
