A sinkhole beside Nicolas Cage’s Malibu home has broken water and gas lines and prompted an evacuation order for nearby properties. The city declared a local emergency on September 8, citing restricted access for residents and emergency responders near 31630 Sea Level Drive.
Coastal erosion washed away the ground beneath the actor’s driveway, causing it to collapse. The hole initially measured 30 feet by 30 feet. It’s since spread along the house’s side to the front door, taking a fence, ladders and temporary construction toilets with it.
Cage, 62, bought the 4-level oceanfront home for $10.5 million in 2024. He primarily lives in Nevada and hasn’t been staying at the Malibu property during the damage.
He’s obtained 3 city permits covering emergency sandbag protection along the beach and the home’s exterior, removal of fallen asphalt ahead of work to shore up the site, and excavation for soil samples.
The broken gas line led Southern California Gas Company to cut service to the area. In its September 8 announcement, the city said sheriff’s deputies had notified residents of the evacuation order in person and that a digital alert had gone out through Everbridge. The American Red Cross was establishing a temporary shelter at Malibu High School, 30215 Morning View Drive.
That emergency notice also warned that forecast high tides and rain associated with Hurricane Marie could worsen conditions. Its coastal flood advisory ran until 11 p.m. on September 8.
