Emilia Clarke Says 30 Seconds on Instagram Can Leave Her Miserable, and She Hasn’t Looked at One Photo of Herself from the Emmys

Emilia Clarke’s Instagram strategy is simple: post and disappear. The Game of Thrones star says even 30 seconds on the app can leave her miserable, and she hasn’t once looked at a photo of herself from the Emmys.

She ties that discomfort to the pressure around appearance. Clarke says expectations have become impossible for both men and women to meet, with women drawing criticism faster.

“You want to just be a population of the same face and the same body? Come on, we’re human! We’re gonna change.”

That pressure follows her into her career too. Clarke says worrying about whether she’ll keep landing roles as she gets older “keeps me up at night”. She’s working on separating her self-worth from other people’s opinions, which she admits isn’t easy.

“The key to complete misery is comparison,” Clarke said. She still catches herself doing it, but tries to recognize the moment and find strength in who she is.
